Happy birthday? Well it was a birthday I guess.

Well Tuesday marked another year in the life of Steve, the 37th to be exact and they get less and less memorable every single year. They are so unmemorable in fact that I have a hard time remembering how old I’m going to be when they are coming around. I guess when you aren’t counting down the days until you can drive, can smoke, can drink, or whatever it just makes you another year older. I don’t feel all that old in my head, I feel like I’ve got the same amount of wisdom and grownupness I had when I was around 22, but when my mom was as old as I am right now I had already moved out on my own. It’s weird to me that I’m old enough to have a kid in college and have classmates from high school that actually do. I’m glad I don’t have any kids in college though, I don’t think I was ready for anything back then, you just shake your head at your past self over how naive you were at almost everything, and I’m sure in 20 years I will look at where I am now and realize that I don’t know anything now either. I think I will end up dying of old age and still not know a damn thing.

About my birthday, it wasn’t all that great. I spent the day getting some gutters for the house. I was going to start installing them but there is rain in the forecast for a good 5 days or so and I don’t want to get caught in the middle of that with the job half done. The part that really made it not great was that I lost Jessica’s iPad when I was out getting the gutters. Since Alexander won’t cooperate in the store when you are trying to look at stuff it’s usually necessary to bring the iPad along so I grabbed hers because it’s got all the good games that he likes to play the most. As we were getting ready to leave I set it on the side of the bed of the truck while I was dealing with the meltdown Alexander was having because I wouldn’t let him help me lift the gutters into the truck. He just doesn’t understand why he can’t help with the easily ruined razor sharp metal pieces. Long story short I left it sitting on the side of the truck and drove off and lost it. Of course I couldn’t get lucky and have it fall into the bed of the truck, it had to fall off somewhere onto the road. I was super pissed at how stupid I was and it didn’t make for a very joyous birthday evening because we were both very short tempered. I ended up getting a replacement one for her yesterday with my fun money and if anyone does find the other one it’s basically worthless to them because it will go on lock down and give our phone number to call to return it. I like that about the new Apple devices, once they are attached to an account and the lost mode is activated you can’t do anything with them so you cant use it or sell it, even if you wipe it and start over.

Potty training is… going I guess. We have our hits and misses. Last night and today he’s done well, actually not wetting himself at all and telling me that he has to go, and today he pooped everything into the toilet without having an accident with part of it, which is the first time he’s done that. Sometimes he just decides that he’s just not going to do it today though and won’t cooperate. Small steps I guess.

I ripped out six bushes out of my front yard a couple weeks ago. what a nightmare that was. I broke a shovel on it and was out there a good part of the day for several days digging out the root balls and then running new dirt up in the wheelbarrow to fill the holes back up and level the ground. Then I threw like twenty or thirty pounds of seed on the bare spots in an attempt to get grass to grow and I’ve been watering it on a regular basis and now… GRASS! YAY! Baby grass coming up anyway. I don’t have good luck getting grass to grow, it seems to do ok for a while and then it gets hot and it all dies off. At some point I’m going to have automated underground sprinklers installed and just lay brand new turf over the whole yard just so I can have something that looks nice for once instead of having to cut it so short because that’s the only way the eclectic mix of grass, crabgrass, dandelions, weeds, and bare spots even looks halfway nice. My goal someday is to have the nicest house in the neighborhood, it may take 20 years to do it though.
